Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a Mom Mentor with Montgomery
County Youth Service Bureau’s Mentoring Moms Program. We’re very excited that you’ve
taken the steps to get this far!

In case you’re still wondering if this
volunteer opportunity is right for you, we
wanted to take the time to share with you
what becoming a Mentoring Mom is all
about!

Being a Mentoring Mom simply means that you’ll get to befriend a new mom! It’s through this
relationship with her that you will be able to bring your important perspectives of motherhood
into the relationship, helping the new mom blossom and reach her fullest potential.

You may be wondering -
Why should I do this?  The answer is simple. What you can do
for this new mom is phenomenal. You’ll be able to provide an extra supportive relationship in
her life, besides her Healthy Families Case Manager. The focus will be on Mom; her needs,
questions and fears. You may be the answer, ear and friend she truly needs at that time. You
will be making a difference in her life.

The mentor serves as a role model and friend to the young mother. Mothers and mentors are
asked to contact one another
two to three times a month and to attend a pre-scheduled
monthly family support meeting
involving all the matches in the program. By sharing your
life experience, helping find answers to life coping questions and becoming a trusted friend,
the mentor can help the young mother:

•        Increase knowledge of living and parenting skills
•        Learn informal networking skills
•        Improve sense of self-worth; and
•        Make further progress on case management goals (education, financial, heath)

What’s the process of becoming a Mentoring Mom? This, too, is simple!  All
you need to do is fill out the following application, send it in, and a Mentoring Moms staff will
be in contact with you to set up a time for a quick get-to-know-you meeting. From there, staff
will glean your interests and match you with a mom who they believe you would match best
with!

Once a Mentoring Mom - Be a friend. Be able to answer questions that the new mom
may have, such as nutrition, budgeting, education, finances, and social service agencies.
Offer to go shopping with her. Offer to be a listening ear. Offer stories of your own
motherhood triumphs and faults. Most importantly, just be a trusted friend.
